Fussy Cutting

Fussy cutting is all about carefully cutting your fabric so to feature a particular image. No one likes it when parts of your image get chopped off or sewn into the seam allowance. Here is a very quick how-to about aligning your cuts carefully.

In this exercise, and for the block lotto this month, we are using 2.5″ squares.

To create a window template cut a 2.5″ square from cardboard or template plastic. Mark your 1/4″ seam allowances and cut out the centre with an exacto knife.

Line up your window with your pattern and trace around the template, or cut carefully against the template (if using cardboard).

Here’s some Kaffe Fassett fabric that works for fussy cutting:

Again, the point of fussy cutting is to centre an image or pattern so that it lines up beautifully in your block. Try it out, it’s loads of fun! And put your fussy cutting skills to good use for our Polaroid block lotto this month. Remember that 4 blocks = 1 ticket so dig out your novelty prints and go for it!
