Block Lotto – August 2019

Star Pinwheel

Unfinished size: 12 1/2” square

Fabrics –

Pinwheel –  a variety of batiks ONLY in lime green, blue violet or a combination of the two. Avoid additional colours. You will need eight different prints for one block.
Background – black solid

Cutting –
Batiks – cut eight different 4 7/8” squares. Cut these all in half diagonally into triangles.
Black – Cut two 2 1/2” X W.O.F. strips. Sub-cut into 8 rectangles measuring 6 7/8” long.

Sewing –

1. Select 8 different triangles. Sew one black background rectangle to each triangle as shown in the photo below, lining it up with the square corner of the triangle. It will extend about 2” beyond the diagonal corner. I pressed the seam towards the batik – handle your bias edge carefully because it can stretch.

2. Using the bias cut edge as a guide trim the black background diagonally to extend to the corner of the background piece. (see photo)

3. Sew two of these units together into a square (see photo). Repeat with remaining units to make four total. They should measure 6 1/2” square. Trim off the “ears”.

4. Arrange in a pinwheel to make the block as in the photo. Sew the top two together, then the bottom two, and press the seams open. Sew these to “rows” together. Square up if necessary to 12 1/2”.

The last photo is two blocks sewn together. I love the secondary pattern that’s created!
