Block Lotto – August 2022

Christmas Tree Farm block

Unfinished size 12 1/2″  X 8 1/2″

Christmas in August! Plenty of time to make up a cute quilt (or table runner?) for the holidays. This block uses a technique that may be new to some – the HRT or half rectangle triangle. Hope you give it a try!

Fabrics:
  • White background – two 5″ X 10″ rectangles cut on the diagonal (you will only use three of the triangles)
  • Assorted prints in bright red and green (they don’t have to be Christmas theme and please don’t use your old Robert Kaufman metallics!) – you can do red/green/red, or green/red/green, or all red, or all green. Cut 5″ X 10″ rectangles on the diagonal – you will use three of the triangles with the long straight edge on the left hand side. Important: cut diagonal line from lower R to upper left. Handle those bias edges carefully.
Sewing:
  • Make three pairs of a white and a print triangle. Referring to the HRT tutorial, sew them together and press with the seam to the dark side.
Trimming:
  • This part is a little tricky so refer to the HRT tutorial. IMPORTANT – They need to end up 4 1/2″ X 8 1/2″ after trimming.
Joining:
  • Sew these three trimmed rectangles together as shown, and make sure the print triangles are on the left side orientation. Press these seams open to reduce bulk. The block should now measure 12 1/2″ X 8 1/2″. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THE MEASUREMENT Incorrectly sized blocks will no longer be accepted into the lotto.

Blocks are returned to September’s MQG Victoria meeting where each block will earn on entry into the Block Lotto.  The winning ticket holder takes home all blocks!

Make one, make two, make lots!

Happy sewing, Diane
