Block Lotto – May 2022

Modern Log Cabin

Unfinished size: 12.5” square

This block is easy to put together and has a nice fresh look for a summer quilt. It’s also an easy one to make multiple blocks if you do all the preliminary cutting and piecing in assembly-line fashion.

Fabric requirements:

  • White solid
  • Red solid
  • Solids of various colours – keep them bright, think sherbet colours, NO DARKS

Cutting:

White solid:

1 – 1 1⁄2” x 2 1⁄2” rectangle

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 4 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 6 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 8 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 10 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 11 1⁄2” rectangles

1 – 1 1⁄2” x 12 1⁄2” rectangle

Red solid:

1 – 2 1⁄2” x 2 1⁄2” square

Assorted solids: NO DARKS

1 – 1 1⁄2” x 2 1⁄2” rectangle

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 4 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 6 1⁄2” rectangles

2 – 1 1⁄2” x 8 1⁄2” rectangles

1 – 1 1⁄2” x 10 1⁄2” rectangle

Sewing:

Sew together each white rectangle with its matching solid rectangle. These will now be referred to as “units”. You will have four white rectangles leftover for the outer border.

  1. It’s helpful to remember that you will always be sewing on the white rectangle. Begin by taking the red square and joining the 2 1/2” long unit to one edge on the white.
  2. Have the red square unit with the pieced unit on the top. Take the 4 1/2” unit and join it to the right hand side by the white edge.
  3. Continue joining the units by size around in log cabin fashion. You may have to check your block as you go, trimming if necessary if it starts “growing”.
  4. When all the units are added, begin joining the remaining white rectangles starting on the top from the last side you added, and continue in log cabin fashion around until they are all joined. Check that your completed block measures 12.5” square.

Blocks are returned to June’s MQG Victoria meeting where each block will earn on entry into the Block Lotto.  The winning ticket holder takes home all blocks!
