Block Lotto – May 2023

Building Blocks

Finished block is 12 ½” square

Fabric choice:

  • Plain or printed
  • Bright blue
  • Light grey
  • Dark grey
  • White

Cutting and Sewing Directions:

  1. Cut a strip of blue and a strip of light grey, each 18” long and 1½ wide.
  2. Stitch together along the long side, using a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seam toward the grey.
  3. Cut this strip into nine 2” pieces.
  4. Stitch together, into three groups of three, alternating the colours. Hint: Chain stitch – it is faster and saves thread!
  5. Cut three pieces of light grey 2” by 1½” and stitch to complete each row.
  6. Measure the length of a row. It will be approximately 7 ½”. Cut four strips of light grey at 7 ½” by 1½”. Note: Slight size variation is inevitable because ¼” seams vary.  This all works out because step 8 accommodates for the variation in size.
  7. Stitch a strip between each row and along the top and the bottom. Press. Finished size approx.  7 ½” by 9 – 9½”.
  8. Add borders, log cabin style. Two sides white and two sides dark grey.  These final strips can vary in width, intentionally. Trim block to 12 ½”.

If you make several blocks vary the shades of blue and grey.

Bring your completed block(s) to the May meeting. You will get one ticket for each block, and winner takes home all the blocks!
