Current Community Project

MQG Victoria currently has selected Q̓ʷalayu House, owned and operated by Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, as their chosen community project.

Q̓ʷalayu (pronounced Kwuh-li-you) House was officially opened July 12, 2021 in an event attended by community partners, donors, supporters, and families with lived experience and included speakers from Island Health, First Nations Health Authority, and the Wei Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum Nations.

Q̓ʷalayu House is a “home away from home” that supports expectant mothers and families from the west coast and northern regions of Vancouver Island and surrounding islands. It provides them with a place to stay while they or their children receive care at the adjacent North Island Hospital or from nearby Campbell River health care providers. More information can be found here.

In the first quarter of 2021 MQGV members participated in a  Community Quilt Sew-Along that resulted in an amazing 26 quilts completed and donated to Q̓ʷalayu House.  Those quilts can be viewed in this blog post.

In 2022 MQGV members once again generously donated their time and talents to make quilts for this worthy cause.  Photos of those quilts can be viewed here.

QuiltCon 2022 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge

The theme for the QuiltCon 2022 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge is Angles.  While members were invited to come up with designs on the theme it was president Natalie Skinner who took up the challenge. She presented several designs to the MQGV Members and they were invited to vote on their favourite.  The design selected and  named by a poll was "Wings of Fire".  Volunteers participated in the construction of the quilt by picking up kits of pre-cut fabric for the half square triangles used in the design.  Once sewn they were returned to a central location where the quilt top was constructed.  Once quilted and bound it was sent to the The Modern Quilt Guild for display in QuiltCon 2022 in Phoenix Arizona.

Then something completely unexpected and exciting happened..."Wings of Fire" was chosen to grace the cover of QuiltCon Magazine!

QuiltCon is the largest modern quilting show of its kind, attracting thousands of participants (and quilts) from around the world.  We are thrilled to be awarded this honour!

QuiltCon 2021 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge

Using a specific colour palette and the theme of “curves” dictated by The Modern Quilt Guild for QuiltCon Together 2021, members of our guild worked together to make this quilt titled “All Linked Together”. It will be donated to Q̓ʷalayu House.
