february 2017 block lotto

This one is inspired by the January Toronto MQG block lotto, made to represent the diversity of women and support the women’s march of January 21, 2017 around the world.

And in the spirit of this month, it’s pink and red!

Start by cutting five pieces of pink or red prints, 6 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.  Cut one piece same size in black.
Also cut ten 4 1/2″ squares.

Now it’s time to make flying geese.  Have you done this before? It is pretty straight forward.  Take one pink or red piece and lay one black 4 1/2″ square on top, aligned to the right side.  Draw a diagonal line from bottom right, to upper left. Pin this so that it doesn’t shift as you sew.

Sew on the marked line.  You can cut off the rest, or as I did, sew another line parallel that will give you an HST to use at some other time.  Cut apart and press to the black.
Do the same on the left side and you should end up with this flying geese block.  Not quite like the traditional flying geese block as you will have more than 1/4″ above your center point.  But that’s what the Modern quilting is about, taking traditional and making it something new.  Right?
Make 4 more flying geese (5 altogether) and lay them out with the one black piece, putting the black one wherever you like.  Hopefully we will all put it in a slightly different spot, giving a great random layout for the winner of these blocks.

Now simply sew together.  Trim it square to a 12 1/2″ block.

Have fun, make one.  Or two, or a whole flock of geese.  As always, each block = one ticket.
