Souper Bowl applique step by step photos
We’ve had the question “can we use neutrals for the background?” the answer is NO but you can use tints and shades of the colours in the colour palette given.
Another question! Yes you can use fusible web instead of appliquéing by hand BUT please try to keep the bowl-and-shadows soft and flexible, rather than allowing the rigidity that sometimes happens with fusible. Also you must stitch around the edges if you’re using fusible.
Have fun, and thanks for helping.
A blast of 505 spray made quick work to stick down the paper to our cardboard. (Cheerios. Good for your heart and your quilting!)
This line should be extended onto the bowl template before cutting out.
All cut apart.
Traced out.
Fabric pull for the bowl.
Options for the background. Colour on the far left is actually pale green.
NOT SHOWN: cutting out your fabrics. Leave yourself at least a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Test run. Looks good.
Appliqué step one: bowl base to shadow.
Appliqué step two: inside shadow and bowl inside. Note how I folded the seam allowance (on the grey) along the traced line.
To ease the curve you can snip the seam allowance. The black is my pants, not part of the appliqué.
Appliqué step three: bowl base/shadow piece to bowl.
Appliqué step four: attaching bowl piece to the inside/shadow piece.
Again, cut into the seam allowance to ease the curve at the upper edge of the bowl.
Ta-done! All ready to be appliquéd to the background. I will likely trim the seam allowance down now that I’ve got the hang of the appliqué.
The bowl and shadows should be 9.5″ wide and your background 12″ wide. The finished edge of the bowl should be 1.25″ from each side.
Pin your bowl into place on the background.
Using random coloured thread (mustard and black in my case) baste the bowl to the background, staying at least 1/4″ away from your marked lines.
Remove pins and get ready to sew!
Half-way done. I started on the top as that’s an easier part.

Um, just wondering if I've lost the template? was it in with the fabric in the kit? I put the fabric into one of the ziploc baggies from the free table but I don't have a template. Help!
